CUTE WAYS TO JAZZ UP YOUR DORM ROOM
College brings about so many new thrills in life – the independence, new friends, new scenes to explore, possibly a new city, and so soooo much more. But with all the excitement, one thing should remain constant and peaceful, and that is your room. Even though you’ll most likely be living that dorm life, you can still make your space your sanctuary. Buh-bye bland walls and boring bookshelves! Read on to get some ideas to make your dorm your cozy and cool happy place.
ADD SOME GREENERY!
We’ve all seen the adorable tiny succulent plants – they’re everywhere! Succulents are an affordable way to liven up your dorm and add some color. Plants instantly change the look of a room and bonus tip: they’re cacti so they need veeeery little maintenance so if you forget to water them, no biggie!
DECORATE YOUR FURNITURE WITH WASHI TAPE!
Most dorms will come with a desk and bookshelf (boring, old, and wooden? check), but you’ve got some options to spice it up. Pick up some washi tape in a cute design and line the edges and beyond. Hit Pinterest for some ideas and get creative with it!
LIGHT IT UP!
From fairy string lights to hanging paper lanterns to neon-inspired LED lights, there are a billion options out there for affordable AND cute lighting. Pass on the harsh ceiling light, and think soft, yellow lighting for an instant cozy vibe. Besides the essential desk lamp for those study seshes, try adding a lamp or string lights to your room for some cute and functional decor.
THROW PILLOWS FOR DAAAAYS!
Our belief here is the more pillows – the better. Your bed should be a haven that you dream of on those long days in class, and cute pillows definitely kick up the comfy factor. Mix and match patterns to the color scheme you’ve got going on and have fun with it!
DIY THE HEADBOARD OF YOUR DREAMS!
Sadly, a gorgeous tufted headboard isn’t in the cards for university dorms but anything you can dream, you can find a way to make these days. Pinterest is an amaaaazing resource for finding cool and easy to make DIY headboards. It can be as easy as hanging a curtain rod above your bed, putting a sheer white curtain on it, and throwing on some hanging string lights behind to create a magical space.
LIT HANGING PHOTO ALBUM
Speaking of string lights (they’re just so fun and useful!), they also can be used to display your fav people in your life by clipping photos to them. Pick up some of the mini wooden clothespins from a dollar store, Michael’s, or Target and get to stringing up all of those beloved family and friend pics for a hanging photo album.
WASHI TAPE PHOTO FRAMES
That washi tape we talked about earlier? Got some leftover still? Great! You can also pop some of it onto photo frames to create fun borders. Getting creative with this stuff is SO much fun and would be a great way to have a bonding sesh with new friends doing an easy DIY project together.
REMOVABLE WALLPAPER IS YOUR FRIEND!
Go Google “removable wallpaper” right now. It’s okay, we’ll wait while you pick your jaw up off the floor. There are some seriously gorgeous removable wallpapers out there that are perfect for short-term stays in a dorm room to add a killer level of style without leaving a trace once you move out.
You’ll never know what you’ll find hitting up a thrift store, and for the college student on a budget, finding statement vintage home decor in your price range is pretty much a given. There are gems just waiting to be found at a sliver of the price compared to Anthropology and Urban Outfitters on thrift store shelves that can bring a ton of charm to your room.
